Whether you are an Entertainer, Hypnotherapist or other Business person, your Business Card can tell potential clients a lot about you and your company.

The first thing we often tell our clients is that card stock (the quality of material your business card is printed on) is very important; after all, unless your card is scented, flavoured or has audio properties (all of which are doubtful!) , the feel of the final printed card is 50% of the sensory experience.  If your card is printed on a quality material, potential clients will pick up on this – maybe only subconsciously – but it will reflect on your future bookings. Quality Business Cards = A Quality Business!

The next thing to consider, is the texture & finish of your printed business card. There are a lot of options available, and many of these will be dependant on the requirements of you and your business. For example, a Gloss paper stock may look like the best quality, but as a rule it is not ideal for writing on with a ballpoint pen (although it is with a permanent marker pen such as a Sharpie). This means that a Gloss Card is not ideal for Magicians & Mentalists who use their cards in routines where a prediction etc is written on the card. Neither would this be the most suitable card for Hypnotherapists, Doctors Surgeries, Dentists etc where appointment times need to be added to the card. In these cases, perhaps a Matt Finish Card printed on quality thick (400gsm) stock would be more suitable. This would also apply to companies who wish to use their business cards as an affordable alternative to receipts (such a Taxi Firms).

However Matt business cards do not have to be boring, flat, dull and lifeless. For a small additional charge we can add a Spot UV Varnish to your card, making the important parts stand out in a glossy manner, without compromising the ability to write on the remain areas of the card. Spot UV is a high shine varnish applied to selected areas of the card, usually in line with a logo, selected text etc, although some clients will prefer to have an additional and separate design overlayed in Spot UV to make the design more magical or unique. Imagine a Hypnotist’s business card with a glossy hypno-swirl across the whole card, or perhaps a Magician’s card with a Top Hat printed on it, and the Rabbit sticking out the hat in Spot UV… The possibilities are endless! Spot UV treatment makes any business card look extremely expensive & luxurious, yet in truth the cost of the varnish is quite affordable!

Design of your card is also a major factor in getting more business. We are often asked to cast an expert eye over a client’s existing publicity & promotional material, and certainly in the case of entertainers, we see the same mistakes being churned out time and time again. Whilst every cases is slightly different, our general advise is as follows –

  • DON’T make the largest piece of text on your business card / poster etc your name… It’s just an ego trip. Unless you are extremely well known in your area of expertise by the public, most potential clients are only fussed about “What You Do” and not “Who You Are”.
  • CONSIDER the real advantages and disadvantages to having your photo / image printed on your business card. As above, does it really do your clients any good to see your face on your card, when it is at the expense of having your contact details so much smaller. Again, unless your are an unusual act with an unusual look, most clients couldn’t care less about your appearance. It’s an ego trip!
  • DON’T include a free email address or (worse still) web address – You are (supposedly) a professional, charging professional fees for a professional service – at least make the effort to invest in a unique domain for your site, email etc.
  • ALWAYS have a landline telephone number on your business cards for clients to book you on. Even in this day and age, with 92% of adults in the UK owning a mobile phone (http://media.ofcom.org.uk/facts/) a landline telephone number looks far more respectable,  trustworthy & professional. If for any reason you do not wish to have your personal landline number on your business cards, look at investing in a “fake” landline telephone number from, for example, Skype – (http://beta.skype.com/en/business/#stayconnected) which can be picked up on a range of smartphones… ideal for the entertainer on the road! Sure, have a mobile phone number as well, but not instead.
  • CONSIDER the addition of a QR code to your cards. With the “recent” advent of mobile internet access, a QR Code can make viewing your site and details almost instantaneous.

What does your business card say about you? In the UK, the standard business card is 85x55mm and not the size offered by some of the “Free” companies (90x50mm) who then want to advertise THEIR company on YOUR card! Treat your potential clients to a quality business card that feels the same as your product and service – high class – it’ll cost you less than you think!
